After looking at the generational shifts that are happening from deep attention to hyper attention got me thinking about the speed and changes in the technological world today and how it can be attributed to this shift for the current generation. Not just how quickly it is changing, but the direction we are going as a society based on Hyper Attention. We are developing into a society focussed on efficiency because of our seemingly limited attention spans, that only seems to be getting worse. From things like going to the ‘pictures’ to see a film or renting a video at the local video store has already changed in my short lifetime to Netflix where you can watch countless movies and shows instantly at any time without even leaving your couch. To going out and buying groceries at a store can now all be done online and delivered to your home without any social interaction. Progress is inevitable, however in what way should we focus our efforts in progression, are we as a society developing in the right way? Because it appears as though we may lose people with deep attention based off of the efficiency of everything, making so much so easily accessible. Finding new and better ways of doing things is how we have always progressed as a species, but the speed of which we can progress today is dramatically shifting the way society thinks as a whole. Is it a good or bad thing? Only time will tell.
