Reading 1 – Evolving world of documentaries

Related to this week’s readings, documentaries in recent years have become more of a form of entertainment. Rather than the way David Attenborough just delivers facts documentaries have evolved to the point where they can be mini-movies; they tell a story and provoke emotion.

A recent example is the INXS special INXS: Never tear us apart. Not only did it document the band story but did so with humour and emotion.

Another example is the mini-series Fleming: The man who would be Bond which documents Ian Fleming’s (the author and creator of James Bond) life which influenced his creation of James Bond. The makers themselves admit that even though it documents his life, its primary goal is to entertain rather than just inform the viewer.
