How do I learn?

During todays lecture we reflected on an article about different learning styles. It focused on the 2 primary styles, deep cognitive thinking, which is a learning style that involves high levels of concentration for prolonged periods of time. The second style is hyper attentive, this refers to learners with short attention spans who require high levels of stimulation often involving multiple mediums. In groups we spoke about the shift in contemporary society from deep to hyper active learners. We discussed how the presence of portable technology such as laptops, ipads and iPhones has enabled us to consume multiple media simultaneously.

Selfie

The rise of the infamous selfie:

In a modern day society the concept of a selfie is an ever growing phenomenon which has reached new heights.  There has been much debate into the narcissism behind selfies and how they have contributed to our conceded and egotistical world. I believe that the selfies most negative effect is not on the person behind the lens but on the viewer. The photographer may simply be interested in sharing a moment of joy and uniqueness in their life with others. Whilst it may take a matter of seconds for someone to capture and post an image of themselves on the web the collective compilation of all these images is warping media consumers ideas about life. This is creating unrealistic expectations and so often leaving us to feel inadequate and unfulfilled. It is important for us to recognise that selfies are just minute flashes of individuals lives that generally only document the high points, an impossible standard for us to expect of ourselves in our day to day lives.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo`s collection of self portraits are amongst the most recognisable self portraits around. Her use of rich vibrant colours have confronted Mexican culture and Kahlo`s Mexican heritage. Her inanimate facial expressions in conjunction with her use of typical portraiture angles and dimensions has created the timeless and iconic images which have withstood the test of time. Her portraits have been constant subjects of appropriation and inspiration in contemporary art.
