Deconstructing 1

https://youtu.be/JJOnSIefLQw?t=1439

This what I expect of my film. A normal documentary. My final project would contain three parts. The street scene, the interview and some close up shoot (including restaurant and food or customers) Document 72 Hours is a good reference for my final project.

The street scene included some shoot from swanston st which has a huge Crowd and of cause China town(some close up shoots of restaurant in order to introduce the topic–Chinese food). The second part would be a introduce of a Chinese Restaurant which i have asked to the the owner. I would take some shoot of the interior and interview of the owner/customers. Some close up shoot of how to make the food would be took at the second part in the restaurant.

Yesterday i took some shoot on the street, the result is higher than i was expected. So this week i will capture some street scene like the one i showed in this clip, for example the snapshot(which could be used at the begin of the film to introduce the background just like many documentaries) and slow motion(can describe how to make a meal, i will put it in the second part) also i try to make the shoot sometimes out of focus then sometime focus. The effect is quite good.

So i make the plan of the following weeks. The following two weeks i would put focus on shooting the street scenes and interview, to make the shoots settle down, the last week would be focusing on some editing stuffs.

And last week i try to help with others project, xiaochen who is from Robin’s class, his is doing a drama, i helped with the audio, we meet some technique stuffs. This is sometime really disturb us. Hope i will be fine with it.

Deconstructing

When doing a documentary (or half of drama)about food is quite easy to entry but it is a difficult process. I have watched some of food documentaries for example: A Bite of China (2012),The little Paris Kitchen: Cooking with Rachel Khoo (2012),Noodle Road: Connecting Asia’s Kitchens(2008).Even they all good, but they are not MY documentary, like tutors said when i first present my idea, what do you want to present in your film, the beauty of Food or some Perspective. It might be very important for me to do a film—“only my Film". The clip i am showing below is a fragment from Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) could be a guid for my final project.

https://youtu.be/3g5KIuavNTU

This clips shows both the interview and how character making sushi, which is my thinking for my film. I would take some shoots in the restaurant just like this clips.

I found that there is a interview in the first minutes, and the director combine it quite good with 3 different forms, first of it is a pan of books then the interview.I like the following form of it which is the interview as a voiceover then the vision is some other shoots or just picture. This is quite normal in the documentary however i was never realized. This is which we called the voiceover is loyal with the picture.

I also like the scenes at 1:55′ with the focus changes in such a short time. And the following scenes are contain lot of close up shoots which is popular in food documentary, and i would follow this kind of method.  When  they doing the cooking staff i just put some music as background to leave so space for audiences “breathing".  I found there are 2 main position for this scene, this also could be a reference.  One of the most important method used in this scene is slow motion, i also found it in other documentaries.

Speech draft of week7

My presentation will outline where my inspiration comes from and  introduce the background of my idea then  i’m gonna show you my shooting plan at the end.

So start from the idea inspiration: which extremely attracting me after i watched a BBC documentary  called little paris kitchen, the character in the film Rachel Khoo uses her own way to teach the audience how to cook French cuisine in a quick and easy ways. Then i found why not doing a film about food? It is a good opportunity to introduce Chinese food, moreover i believe the food reflects the culture, so i start researching.

Here is a quick guide of Chinese food :The staple foods of Chinese cooking include rice, noodles, vegetables, sauces and seasonings. Due to china is a big nation, different parts has different  Diet culture.for example the people who came from north of china would prefer noodle opposite the people from south of china may choose rice, this is because of the climb. In addition, Chinese cuisine includes styles originating from the diverse regions of China, there are  8 culinary traditions. There are Cantonese, Szechuan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui, Zhejiang  Fujian and Hunan cuisines. The first four would  be the main culinary cuisine, except Shandong, others are all south of  China.

Now I am gonna show you one of my favorite movie  Eat Drink Man Woman which directed   by Ang lee in 1994 and related to my topic, it might guide a little bit more about Chinese food culture. I like sound record in this fragment.

In this film, Ang lee discussed his own point of view with the relationship between  family members, and food as a tool of it. Also, There is a proverb saying:Food is the paramount necessity of the people in China. Ancient Chinese connected food with Philosophy of life. It lead to my curiosity. My final project film3 would be a journey of exploring. So I plan to do the thing as step of each week.

A New and Final idea

I like to share with my new idea on film 3 final project, doing a dram i’m rather like doing a documenter, especially when i saw a BBC documentary “The Little Paris Kitchen: Cooking with Rachel Khoo (2012)” This documentary quite inspire me. Then i start thinking, why not make a documentary is about what we eat? My point of views is FOOD always represent  the culture and

due to my special background(international student) I found it would be more interesting to excavate what international students are eating. In addition, China is really a big country, different part would have totally different style of cooking. At the same time, our diet habit is also different from Western’s. I would like to find out how Chinese student made their meal and it could be his/her hometown dish.

About the shot.

I even think about how to shot, it could be star with the scene of several scene in Melbourne City

to introduce the background, then i would put a shot interview of the character, then i am gonna track shooting the whole process of he/she make a dish.

The places might including: Vic market, super market, tram..

My reference

There are also some good work i can consult with, for example  the large series documentary which has a huge succeed before:A Bite of China (2012).

Eat Drink Man Woman(1994) Ang Lee ’s early work which is one of my favorite film,i like the begin of the chef cooking, sound recording are good and the scene of edit is fluency.

Scenes in Animation

Recently i have watched a animation which named BoJack Horseman. I found it is quite interesting to analyze the scenes in the animation, and of course compared with film or TV it has some similarity. I quite like the opening so i just talk about it.

My point of view is that the animation is not limited by some situation which the film and TV needed consider like the location and other circumstance. The opening is a good example.

In this several scenes, we can find that it might be difficult to realize in reality. THE COOL pan shot. We can easily understand through the form of drawing however it‘s difficult for real people, especially in the scene BoJack fall in the swimming pool.

Writing (film ideas draft)

GETTING AN IDEA

My idea come up from the traffic, i think it could be a symbol for a city, then i found that tram is the most symbolic mark for Melbourne especially compared with some other places, so my stories might started with two transportations, train and tram. This is a begin of two Romance short films.

love drama 1(Tram)

This is a romantic story, the actor often encounter the same girl (actress) on the same tram. According to tradition, they should be fall in love,so one day they met in the station (yet the scriptwriter have not decided what would happen) It is a love story! But i have some idea about some details, like the girl should be holding a book and it would be shoot at Flagstaff station or Parliament station. And i took some photos in parliament station, i thought it would be good.

Following attach could be some angle of the shoot or camera positions.

DB1EDCF6-3150-404D-ADCB-44DBBE608BCA5ED3B45E-60C5-498E-900D-84B710B1ECE62C56F90F-7B21-4D21-84F6-383FBE9E755CA47E2FFC-BA90-4BF4-9F17-7F4DFD4F6F7BEC0AB975-3951-44BC-8DB4-7C88EB3486105546B420-7E2C-40D1-8D00-8FBB98EAB562

love drama 2 (Train)

The inspiration comes from myself, the day when i went to Victoria Market i missed the train just few seconds, then i thought why could it be a story happened with a couple. So here is the draft of the story.

The actress had some depression(could be some dialogue between the couple)and the actor give some encourage, they were talking while working to the tram stops, but the tram was just passed by in front of them(they missed the tram)if they choose to go to the next stop ,they had to run, because the red light might stop the tram for a while, so they decided to caught it, the actor holding her hand all the way, however they still missed it, but she seems to find the courage…(it seems stupid)

I thought the best location for it would be William street.

Next week i will record some transportation sound which could help my stories and watch a movie which filmed at station.

Stand by idea

The inspiration

The Ongoing Reflection

At the beginning of all, my aim is tiny simple which is “understanding” films and enjoy the film with professional understanding. Of course how to make a film might on the list as well. And these are the reasons for me to choose the film 3 studio. I am happy it is close to my expectation even it is just week 4, i have some new perspectives when i watching films. I kind of fall in a emotion that helps me going to a deep thinking, especially during the class and the class practices. These kind of experience expand my mind when i first watch a film.

For example, before learning i always attract by film script, and this is the only way for me to judge a movie. Judging a movie weather a good or bad is only the narrow understanding. Upon this semester I might unintentionally attention the vision itself or how to say (the “film” itself), such as sound and light color camera angle, Of course, how to edit is also a point. These are mentioned in the last few weeks of tutorial. For instance, recently the other course Asia cinema require us to watch the Japanese film Tokyo drifter( 1966 Seijun Suzuki )Suzuki is good at layout stage, his camera is ideal for drama and i like the music as well.

Perhaps what we have learned in the course like focus and white balance might be the  basis ,it is  a pieces of cake for masters but for me, these newcomers may also cause problems, for example, I did not even familiar with filming equipment, that Paul hope that write down the data of our shoots last Friday. I have to asked the students who experienced.

After few weeks, my acquaintance  is that imagination is always different from actuality. Shooting is the last reference, the situation appears in a real shooting is the most unpredictable, and sometimes even shoot around you, and finally I was finally taken down all the things that control. I think those powerful master must also be experienced, they might practice more than one million times.

Week 3 Tutorial reflection

This week tutorial made me feel like we were on the right track, not only the progress but also the exercise,  especially this Friday.  As usual, Paul took some time to introduce what white balance is. White balance (WB) is the process of removing unrealistic colour casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the “colour temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light.(from google)

WB is a word which i know about form photograph, however obviously it also belongs to filming.  Instead of talking, we jump into exercises in group of 3 to collect images for a 1or2 minute “abstract"film as the fragments Paul showed before.

This time, it seems to be more technique touch(at least for me).JESS KIRALEE and I  decided picking the natural environment view near building 9. Actually none of us know clearly about the professional words like which one is the focus point . To avoid that kind of problem and also for learning i took some picture as below. After the class i asked Haisi, she has touched this kind of stuff last semester. I am happy our studio system like this. Helping each other with the weakness.

At last i also got some valuable note from class:(it must be help for me during next shooting)

1600k – candles

3200k – film lights

4000-5200k – fluorescent lights

5200-5600k – sunny
