week 11

According to Fox and Broderick (2017), A loud sound or passage feels all the louder if preceded by quiet. This is an interesting idea I’ve never noticed about, which I always keep the volume consistent. However this time I can try to detailedly edit the sound of not making every sound volume consistent but making it rhythmic and undulating. Also when I want to highlight a key sound, I may set the previous passage quiet or a low volume.

Until now I’ve finished the first version rough cut about the footage only, which I haven’t done the sound design part and I’m planning to put it on the last step just as Kim said sound mix is always the final step. However to sum up my work right now, I think I have incorporated some feedback from the pitch and my classmates and these feedbacks really help me to improve my work. As initially I wanted to use the voiceover from archival footage, however now I’ve written my own script and I will use my voice to make my film more unique and deeper. Moreover for the footage I choose to use the specific footage like a specific event or an object. Furthermore in the sound design part I choose to add more sound effects like factory, streets and laughter as well as conversation rather than just voiceover and background music, those sounds help to create different atmospheres and express different emotions. As all footage is used from archive and found footage, I found it kinda hard to find the proper footage I want — some footage is too old and may be weird and the copyright is also a main point of attention. Additionally the sound resources are hard to find as well, there is usually no good music you want so sometimes you have to spend more effort on mixing and matching them. However these challenges have made me more passionate to make this film and more meticulous, and at least now I am satisfied with what I have done though there’s still many things I need to do — like to figure out how to better blend the new found footage with the old archival footage, how to make the images appear in the movie in a more harmonious and interesting way as well as the mix of sounds.
