Reflection part 1

Since last semester I have been looking forward to join in Small Things, and this semester I finally get into this studio, my passion and expectations of learning are ready to go.

In my opinion, the Small things studio is a great studio which gives students opportunities to practice their filming making skills into a professional industry level. It is not only teach you how to make, shoot or edit but inspire you, and encourage you to break out the limitation of the usual thinking (like making film boring instead of interesting). Moreover, I think it is also a rigorous course. As the name of this studio, it requires students focus on every small things (even including how to set cameras) during the film making process, and those small things are helping students become more careful and responsible for their works. Also I think the studio is a free space for students to discuss and reflect their own or others works, that students are given the chance to watch others work, it helps students to get inspired and reflected as well.

As mentioned before, I have a huge expectation to learn things from this studio. First of all, I really want to improve my technical skills, understand more about the foundation of film making, and some small things about it I hardly cared before. For example, to learn to operate different and more professional cameras, learn to use shortcut keys and editing methods to improve my skills and working efficiency. Secondly I wish I can learn to be more creative, because I think creative thinking is very important to film making. I really wish to put aside my inherent ideas and making film in more creative ways, which can be used on connections of two shots, the story lines of a script or editing parts… Lastly as filmmaking may not be a individual work, I also want to learn how to work as a group more efficiently. This time it is necessary to think how to actively reflect others ideas and suggestions in order to improve my own work.
