Magic Pillows
I found this reading to be the most useful for myself at the beginning of this course, as I seem to struggle a little bit with actually coming up with good stories that can be made into short films. In ‘Getting An Idea’ I liked how Robin explained that some ideas may be better put to use in a song or poem etc instead of film, and this really did help me see that not every story idea is going to be suitable or make a great film. This piece of advice from the reading will indeed help me when it comes to thinking up my own stories for short films. The other main point I took away from this reading is that screenwriting is all about writing films that you yourself would like to see, this makes it easier to love the idea you come up with and helps ensure that all the feelings, characters and atmosphere’s you would like to see in a film can be included. I found the Roman Polanski quote talking about this to be really interesting and helpful.
To be honest, Screenwriting has always intimidated me a little bit. I don’t particularly know why, but it has. So this lecture explaining some major things about it has helped me feel somewhat more comfortable with it. One of the main points I took away from this lecture was that Screenwriting a story is not like real life. The story is invented and everything within it is invented too – from the work, the characters, the feelings and the structure of how it is told. This completely invented world creates the basis for a story to be told, in which a protagonist is faced with a problem they need to overcome. This lecture helped me realise that the problems that arise in a screen write have to be something outside the everyday – in order to make everyday activities interesting to an audience. The example used of ‘Seinfield’ helped make it all make sense!
I chose to study Film-TV1 this semester as I believe it will help me engage with my creative thoughts and benefit me when it comes to my film making abilities. I still don’t have a sure answer to what exactly I want to do with this Media degree once completed, but I do know that I love film and TV and would really enjoy a job working in either industries. Due to this, my goals and desires for this particular subject are to learn as much as I can about making film and TV. To become more comfortable with sharing my ideas in group situations and to believe in myself and my ability to actually make good short films. A desire I have wiht his subject is also to improve my creative story writing skills. I plan to try my best at everything this subject throws at me, and a major goal for me is to have fun whilst completing this, to come out at the end of the 12 weeks with more knowledge and skills, and an improved ability to work in film and Television.
The position taken in this article is that any project that starts with an intention to document the ‘real’ and that uses digital interactive technology to realize this intention can be considered an interactive documentary. – from week 1 reading
