As I suspected I’m not overly happy with this scene and there are some other problems that I didn’t notice during shooting. However, I’m not as displeased with it as I had originally anticipated. One major problem is that the footage is over exposed- rookie mistake! At the time I liked the bright tone of the shots (as I couldn’t shoot at night it provided a stark contrast that still gave an eerie feel), but as I forgot to adjust the view finder to show exactly what the camera was recording, I was unaware of this over exposure. I might have noticed this if I was able to burry my eye in the lens. Another problem that went unnoticed was the strobing on my actor’s striped shirt. Again I can attribute this to watching the view finder. These mistakes however, have taught me the importance of using the eye piece.

Continuity was also an issue as I would allow my actors to only do small parts of the scene for single shots. This made it difficult to edit as actions didn’t match up and in result I would have to cut earlier or later than I liked. From this, I have decided that from now on I will have my actors rehearse several times to develop their actions on particular word cues. This continuity issue forced me to use the close up which I would have rather left out. I feel the close up doesn’t work as it just appears in the scene thus jolting the viewer and taking them out of the moment.

Whilst there is a small amount of context for the cuff links, I feel the shot at the end is quite awkward. This could be due to the missing ‘F’ and ‘U’ from them. I had the intention to use motion tracking to attach the letters but after several tutorials and little progress I couldn’t figure out how to do this on premiere pro. After editing the shots, I decided to try adding some background music to heighten the intensity. I would have loved to been able to use to music from the original but had to settle for some music online. Whilst I’m not entirely sure the music is successful, the scene is slightly better for it.

One thing I did like about this scene was my framing of the two shot of my actors reflections in the mirror. I think the double image of ‘Frank Underwood’ makes for a particularly interesting shot. This was not easy to set up due to the height differences of my actors. This issue is quite noticeable in the pan leading up to the shot.

Shooting this scene was no easy feat, however it was an invaluable experience as I learnt a great deal of things. Even if some of them were ‘how not to’s’. I’m eager to shoot this scene again in a much simpler way.
