After re-reading the description of The Scene in Cinema, I have realised just how much I have learnt about film making and that I have developed a great interest of coverage/decoupage. The description does make a great deal more sense than it did after my first reading. This is due to in-class explanations, demonstrations, practical work and required readings. All of these elements put together have aided my understanding and have reignited my interest in directing; which was what I initially wanted to pursue after my studies. My understanding of the description’s first definition of coverage, is that a scene must be ‘covered’ by enough shots that the script for a certain scene is presented as a whole to the audience. This definition for me was laid out in the first week of classes by Robin elaborating upon what he’s written. The second definition however, took a little more time and research to understand. What was most useful in helping me form opinions and an understanding of decoupage was the Luis Bunuel reading Decoupage, or cinematic segmentation. Bunuel implied that there was more room for creativity in this form of segmentation and that this was solely the director’s responsibility to plan. Bundle did however, undermine the role of editors as he suggested that they played no role in determining decoupage (this was where my opinion differed).
Furthermore before undertaking this studio, I wasn’t aware that I had very little idea what a film/t.v director does. This surprised me as I have considered and am interested in directing as an option after my studies. I now know that a directer determines all elements of decoupage which has an enormous impact over a film or t.v. show’s overall tone and style. Due to this realisation and understanding, I’m interested in pursuing and experimenting with decoupage. In particular, I’d like to look at the coverage of monologues- something I never would have considered before this class. Eventually I’d like to block my own actors and formulate my own coverage of a monologue for the end of the semester.
Whilst I still don’t consider myself an expert on coverage/decoupage, perhaps at the end of the semester I’ll be closer again to becoming one. The more I experiment and research examples of creative/interesting/high quality coverage, the more ill come to know and develop as a film maker.
