During week 3 the reading specified took on understanding the mechanics of immersion through a psychophysiological perspective. Also the notion of objectivity through the principle of umwelt was explored.
The first practical demonstration mentioned within the piece was Steve Reich’s Tape Loop in which the phrase “It’s gonna rain” is looped various times, in which the phrase gets shorter and the listener subconsciously makes adaptations to their listening style in order make sense of what they are hearing. Once the loop gets so fragmented many will attest to musical qualities of the phrase. The next practical demonstration of Diana Deutsch’s “Sometimes behave so strangely” within the article, showed how repetition primes the listening style to from speech to song.
During a usual day routine, I found myself listening to Madlib’s album Beat Konducta Vol. 1-2: Movie Scenes in which he sampled a phrase “Funny How Things Can Change ™ – The Black Voices: On the Streets of Watts ™ 1960’s. Upon reviewing the original text, from my understanding the poet was consciously trying to shift the listener into a state of semantic listening with the deliverance and afrocentricity of the spoken word into reduced listening state after repetition occurs.
