For this exercise I decided to analyse a shot from my favourite recent film, Parasite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7JPNXt_oqM. In this scene the family is trying to clean up the mess they have made after taking advantage of the Park family’s wonderful home while they are away.
The more times I watch this scene the more impressed I am with it! I believe it does a great job to convey the stress and madness that is happening in this house at this point. But it also uses the pauses in the music and uses framing to show how relaxed and unphased the Park family are while walking in what seems to them to be their home just as normal. There is so much movement in the camera in this scene, not too much of it is completely still.
The first shot of this scene is what seems to be a full 360 degree turn around the kitchen, which is quite impressive. It sets the scene and shows a lot of information all at once. This first establishing shot is then suddenly cut to a close up of the mother filling up a saucepan, which fits very perfectly in with the music. There is then a tracking shot down into the basement with a very sudden 180-degree turn. I thought about this part for a while and I wonder why they decided to do a pan rather than two different shots. I’m not quite sure, but my only thought might be that the camera kind of mimics the speed the characters, almost like the camera is running along. Although I’m still a bit stuck on that one. The next shot is quite a creative one as well, the extreme birds eye shot spinning around over the daughter cleaning glass. Although I think this one may further my last point that maybe this is to create extra camera movement that makes the audience feel as nervous as the family are while trying to clean the house. The next shot that I really appreciated was when the son is calling his father for help in the basement and the camera pulls backwards and then follows him up the stairs briefly. I really liked this shot; it makes the audience feel a bit more involved in the movement of the character. The next shot I really enjoyed was of the mother pouring the noodles out of the saucepan, the camera follows her eyes around for a cool, motivated shot.
Overall, I really love this scene, I think that it has a perfect amount of distressing shots and standard shots cut together. I think they cut it really well to the soundtrack as well, so that the sections where the song was a bit quieter and less dramatic the Park family were waltzing in and were under the impression their house was as normal. I think all of the shots worked together well to create a stressful scene even more stressful.
