One of the biggest reasons that I decided to take the plunge and move to Melbourne was because I genuinely felt as though there was such a more expansive host of work-experience and educational opportunities as opposed to in Brisbane. That’s why I took notice of when RMIT’s “Offbeat” program was advertising for several positions a few weeks back, hoping to get my foot into the door and gain experience in an area of the industry that I intend on exploring on a professional level.
After having an interview with the head producer in March I joined the team and came aboard as a program writer. While this isn’t necessarily the role that I specifically one day hope to have, any experience in the field is invaluable. This is even just as a way of engaging with that element of the industry to better understand where your potential lies and what you need to do to see that potential realised.
Writing for the program is still great because it gives you scope to observe what the other roles (as well as the program as a whole) involve. It’s through getting this hands on experience that you can ascertain what roles your skills are most tailored to and gear your studies in a direction that suits those objectives. Because I would eventually rather be on camera rather than behind it, I need to be more directed in the courses that I elect to take. It’s specific courses that will see me develop the relevant skills that I require according to the facet of the industry that I think I would be most suited to and (hopefully) flourish within.
