Week Three: Reflecting on Project Two

I found that the haiku poem task was a really valid exercise in teasing out different editing techniques, as well as exploring different elements of contrast and juxtaposition. The task also required the translating of textual to visual communication, which required some poetic licensing. The central pillar of my video was to extract the more serene and tranquil elements of the chaotic city environment in which we live and work. I do feel as though the final product underscored this idea quite well, in communicating the ability to find solace and peace amongst chaos.

In having said this, however, retrospectively there certainly was room for improvement in more effectively conveying this analogy. For a start, in future projects I would broaden the distinction between these two key elements (being chaos and tranquility) through the use of colour (or lack thereof). For instance, the “chaotic” city shots should have been in black and white (especially to emphasise the taxing effect constantly drawing energy off such an environment can have). In contrast, the “tranquility” elements should have been brighter and more lively. And, furthermore, there should have been a greater balance of these two elements, as there were more “chaotic” shots than otherwise.

Overall, however, I was pretty happy with the product that I produced, especially given that I have never used Premier beforehand. It is a difficult software to become acquainted with but easy to use once you get the hang of it. Also the software provides such an incredible scope to experiment with different tactics and techniques that I look forward to interrogating in the tasks to come.
