Breaking Borders

Breaking Borders

Breaking Borders is a film about a friend of mine, Andrew Foo. As a kid he lived in the commission flats in South Yarra. Growing up in the flats Andrew would say he was surrounded by a lot of negativity, a lot of doubt and depression, but somehow always had a good attitude. The reason why I chose Andrew was because he is the happiest, high-spirited and joyful person I know. Since he was young he has always wanted to do bigger and better things and breaking borders was the first place he started.

My found footage was mainly through audio by layering sound effects. I wanted to express the struggle of his earlier life in the first half of the film and then switch to show his true personality and how he has used it change his surroundings. My sound effects are really significant in this film because the capture the ambience of the atmosphere. The sound effects really intensify what used to be common trends in his everyday life.

Unfortunately, I had to delete one of my favourites parts of the film due to copy right after discovering that just because it is on archive.com, does not necessarily mean it is copy right free, just free to view.

Reflection on Rose’s Project 3

Rose did an incredible film about a friend of hers who is into art. As always Rose has an amazing eye for detail and placement within the frame.
I had only one aspect that could have been improved, she has a few technical issues with sound, unfortunately the interviewee at the start was very difficult to hear which was a shame because he was saying some extremely interesting things. However this was not intentional but rather a technical difficulty. Other than that the entire 2 minutes was engaging and i honestly felt as though i knew that person well after the two minutes was up. I think i most enjoyed her use of colour. Rose uses for the most part lighter colours such as baby blue, pink, and yellow. this creates a very delicate feel which is also reflected in her sophisticated technical skills.

Sound

In today’s tutorial we explored the notion of sound and the technical side included in recording sound. We were asked to go out and record sounds ourselves, which forced us to focus on the best way to record sound and how to capture it in the best light. It was harder then I thought! So many factors to think about when you are recording sound that’s for sure. I didn’t how much sound really needed to be to which isolated to get the best quality possible. We recorded trams, buses, talking in small rooms and talking in a large room and compared the differences in the sound quality. Sound doesn’t differentiate between you speaking and the background noise its all equal. That’s why its so super important to make sure you have the right surroundings to capture good quality sound. Our most successful sound would have to be the tram out in the street. We really captured the sound of the tram holding it close as well as the noise of the bustling street. As I mentioned before it was difficult to get a really high quality sound but this was a very valuable and useful lesson for the future of my recordings because now I will take great care and put in the time and effort to get a clean sound and make sure my surroundings will work with me to capture this sound.

Scholarly Resources

Today in class we learnt about how to research with liable sources.
Whats a scholarly resource?

Why this is useful

There are so many resources on the internet that can help us with our studies but the question is how many out of many of these are reliable. Well today we were fortunate enough to learn how to effectively use google scholar and RMIT resources to get the best out of not only the web but our own understanding as well.

My take On The Importance Of Collaboration

Definition: the action of working with someone to produce something.

From my understanding anybody can collaborate with another to create a piece of work. Where the beauty of collaboration really shines through is when to people who are extremely passionate in a field come together with different skills or expertise to work on a project. What better example then films itself. A film made by one person is extremely difficult and limiting in many ways. But when the best of the make up, the best of editing, directing and story telling come together pure art is in the making. And I feel nothing is more satisfying than sharing a vision with someone with the same level of passion and sparking new levels of creativity. Ultimately however issues can arise if youre partner or partners do not have the same commitment as you, you may end up taking up more of a load than others but all sharing the pride of the same end pieace which isn’t very fair. This why it is so important to make sure everyone is on the same page. As spoken in class it is important that you both or as a group understand what level of product everyone is willing to commit to, some may simply not have the time to become the next Picasso as others may have- a happy medium is always the best option- and if this isn’t good enough and you have the chance to find a more like minded person otherwise make the best of a situation and work with the group not against.

What is Communication? And is it always good?

Media is made up of television, radio, films and any other electronic form of communication, entertainment or conveying information.

Googles definition of Communication is “the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium”
‘television is an effective means of communication’

but how is television an effective means of communication? I mean we don’t talk to the tv do we, and we can’t have lovely chat with it…if we were to I believe some people might find us rather strange…

Its because the television is communicating ideas to the audience that can activate a response or opinion. Its basically a way of getting ideas across by the masses. So its good and communicating to a large sum of people.

What scares me is the negative effect this can have when the wrong footage is shown in the media for example at the moment there is a lot of rhetoric in the media surrounding terrorism. Now it isn’t exactly my place to be talking since I don’t have much knowledge in the area but I am fearful that the more the media publicises an idea whether good or bad the more the get people thinking about it and may cause a chain reaction. Because these incidents thrive of media publication…isn’t that the very one thing we shouldn’t be giving it? attention? #foodforthought #fearful #TheMediaEffect

Feedback I got from Proj Brief 2

I got a lot of positive feedback for this project from my fellow classmates! they seem to like the layering of sound and the echoing effect I added. I also got positive feedback about the rhythm of the project.. how I managed to edit it to the beat. However the constructive criticism I recieved about my work was that there was an interruption in the flow of the work at the start where I put in my Photographs. I would defiantly agree with this I really did struggle to integrate the photo but we had to have them there. I guess I decided to play them at the start just to get them out of the way so I could then go into the work I was happy with. Looking back at it now I defiantly could have done something more creative with those photos..even spilt screen to show a video and photo playing and the same time, but they layered and had relevance to each other- yeah that could have been cool.

Copyright Facts

1) If you’re an employee of a company for whom you are generating images, music etc. the copyrights to that material belong to the company.
2) You do not have to place the copyright symbol with your name and “year created” near your published or printed materials- but if you do it’s easier to nail someone for infringement on your copyright if you go to court.
3) Pictures, compositions and other “works” whose copyright protection has expired (old stuff) or “works” that were never covered by copyright law (really old stuff) are not copyright protected and are considered in the “public domain” thus can be legally used by anyone.
4) Exceptions to copyright protection include newspapers using copyrighted materials without permission for reporting and teachers who make multiple copies of copyrighted materials for classroom distribution. There also seems to be some wiggle room with using copyrighted materials for portfolios, especially student portfolios.
5) If someone swipes your picture/song/video from the internet and uses it for their own purposes, it is a copyright infringement. (Btw, the same is true if you nick some else’s material for your own purposes.)
