David Lynch has been a big part of this project. His movies are kind of what made me believe you can film anything, regardless of whether it makes plot sense, as long as its valid in some other way, such as being pretty, cool, funny, weird, emotionally moving or scary. I feel this comes through in my work, as it’s based on a dream that really means nothing to anyone else, or even me, on a plot or story level, but the surrealism and absurdity in it is hopefully enough to make it worthwhile (as long as I don’t claim it to be anything more). I also love that his movies are often able to be funny, surreal, confusing, sad and scary simultaneously, which is something I have repeatedly identified as what I’m hoping to do this semester.
Lynch’s work does not always necessarily involve dream sequences, as much as his movies just tend to have a dreamlike feel to them, which comes through in my work, as someone being asleep and dreaming what is happening is never actually represented.
