Week 6/Mid-Sem Break Development of Ideas

Last week Louise and I started to look through music videos as inspiration for our project, as well as photos of Australian culture in the 70s, as this is the kind of look that we’re considering for our video.

We’ve secured the Thornbury Bowls Club as the location for our shoot. Both the interior and exterior of the club have very retro, Australiana feel to it. It is also quite typical of sporting clubs across the country.

We found a number of music videos which were either filmed in similar settings, such as tennis and basketball courts, football fields and skating rinks, or were also shot at night in a suburban setting.

Julia Jacklin – Leadlight

I like this shot of the shoes. All the colours are range from white to cream, but it’s not overly polished. The composition of the shot takes something fairly ordinary, dull and ugly and attempts to make it a point of interest. All of Julia Jacklin’s videos aim for a similar, consistent aesthetic

Angel Olsen – Shut Up Kiss Me

This shot reminds me a bit of the kitchen area in the Thornbury Bowls Club, particularly because of the panelling. The colour scheme is different, and we probably won’t get a shot like this behind a counter, but I feel it’s still good inspiration for the feel we want the project to have.

Julia Jacklin – Pool Party

Again, the panelling and colours in this shot reminds me a lot of our location, as well as the furnishings such as the chairs and the blinds. I also like the symmetry with the windows, and how Julia is placed in the centre.

Lorde – Yellow Flicker Beat

While I’m not sure whether or not we’ll have a chance to film outside of the bowls club and get more shots or the surrounding streets, I really like this shot of the bus stop. I like both the framing of the shelter and the sign, as well as how the light illuminates the middle of the shot while leaving the edges in complete darkness.

We may not create shot quite like these ones, but I think all these videos, as well as the multiple other videos we’ve looked at, are a good starting point to start developing our own shots, costumes, production design and other elements which need to be decided in pre-production.
