The main reason I chose this particular studio was because what Paul said in pitch about focusing on smaller, more achievable projects rather than working towards one ambitious project that is likely to become a larger mess made a lot of sense to me. So far in my degree, I’ve reached the end of each of my studios with a feeling that 12 weeks wasn’t really long enough to do everything I wanted to achieve, or get my work to the quality that I wanted. By focus on “small and contained” projects, I might be able to develop and focus on my skills in a different way than I have been for the last year and half, and potentially work towards creating my own method of working that I can take with me into my final year and beyond.
At this stage, I don’t really know that have too many clearly defined or measurable goals. I know I want to come out of this studio with some smaller projects that I’m proud of, and that demonstrate a sophisticated level filmmaking ability. I also want to use this studio as an opportunity to experiment more with my editing style, as I’ve tended to mostly play it safe or have felt unsure of how I could make my projects more interesting and exciting once I got to the editing stage. I’d also really like to learn more about filmmaking principles and practices, as I feel I still know little more than the 180 degree rule and basic idea behind three point lighting. While I know these principles aren’t so much laws that filmmakers should follow as much as they are general guidelines, I feel that learning more about them and discussing them in class may help me work beyond them and develop my own style.
