Thoughts on the studio so far

We’re already 5 weeks into the course which is slightly terrifying, but I feel I’ve already a learnt a lot from this studio.

I’ve really been enjoying the in-class discussion about old media technology, particular when we look at what we’ve lost and gained in the digital age. It has made me reflect a lot on the time that we’re living in now, and how lucky we are to be in a place where we have so much choice about the way we want to capture the world around us.

In PB2, I became really interested in repurposing old video footage to give it new meaning. I like the idea of exploring this more in PB4 and I’m thinking I’ll find a way to combine old and new media technologies, but I’m still not entirely sure how I’ll go about doing this just yet.

The guest lecturers have also got me thinking a lot more about what kinds of things I want to pursue when I graduate. I’ve realised that a lot of people within the media industry have chosen to explore a number of different crafts that they’re passionate about, rather than choosing a clearly defined path. However, this is not to say that they aren’t incredible skilled or focused on what they do, just that they’re flexible and open to new opportunities.

I’ve also really enjoyed the craft activities we’re been doing in class. The lumen prints in particular were a highlight for me, as I never had an opportunity to work with these materials before. These activities have made me want to learn more about what other art and media forms are out there that I can experiment with.

In terms of what I’m interested in exploring for the rest of the studio, I’m looking forward to discussing new media. While I’m engaging in new media technologies everyday, it’s not something I’ve ever thought in depth about as it’s something I’ve grown up with and using it feels like a natural part of my life. I’d also like to look more a video formats, as film is what I’m primarily interested and one of the main reasons why I’m studying media.
