Workshop Five: Filming a survival guide

Once again, this week’s workshop focused around preparation for Brief 3. With the tables arranged in a very conference room manner so we were all facing one another, we discussed where everyone was at in terms of finding interview subjects and planning their project. While everyone had found very different people to interview, they all sounded like they had interesting stories to tell, and I’m looking forward to seeing the final products.

For the last hour or so of the workshop, we were sent out with Sony MC50 cameras to film a short interview based ‘survival guide’ for the first six weeks of university, however we did come across a few small problems.

Firstly, the microphone levels and volume couldn’t be adjusted, so it was difficult to listen to the audio while recording without hearing a lot of feedback. This wasn’t too bad though, as the audio sound fine when played back, but it’s not ideal for an interview.

Secondly, the exercise was really designed for three people, while I was working in a pair. This meant we couldn’t really interview as we were meant to have at least two interviewees. We ended up just talking directly to camera, as we figured this was better than nothing.

Thirdly, since arriving home I have learnt that the footage has disappeared from my laptop. I know I copied them across, because I remember struggling to find the files in the first place. Luckily, the other person in my time has the files so I can copy them from her.

While the exercise wasn’t too bad, it did make me glad to know I’d be filming with my own camera, as I wouldn’t want to go through all that stress during the real interview.
