I started with the idea of ‘journey’, as I feel I’m still figuring out who I am, and this concept accurately depicts how I feel about where I’m at in my life currently. I focused a lot on trains, as there is a train line that runs through the middle of my street. I can usually here the trains from my house, and the sound reminds me of home, no matter where I am. I liked the idea of starting and finishing with shots of the train line, as it I felt it symbolised how I will always return home.
I wanted to use stop-motion in my video, as stop-motion and animation is what made me originally interested in film when I was a kid. Having the photos from my bedroom walls on the map of where I live allowed me to not only play with different textures, but also to show my home as well as my friends and family in a short amount of time.
Majority of the footage I captured was from one night when I went to Moomba to see a band with my friends. I go out with friends most weekends, and it’s something I’m always looking forward too. I took the opportunity to experiment with light and how it came out on my iPod camera, which isn’t of a particularly high quality. While this was fun to play around with, I’d use a higher quality camera in future as it would give me more control over the final image.
I made the music myself on Garageband. I wanted it to be upbeat, without being too intense, to show that while I enjoy going out and doing things with friends, I also enjoy being at home and taking things slow every now and then.
I’ve also included audio of my friends talking at lunch one day. My friends, who are a bit weird but wonderful, are incredibly important to me and have helped make me who I am today. You can hear them laughing towards the end, which I really liked as a way to finish the film.
