This afternoon I had my very first experience of live broadcast television. Somehow it was both incredibly stressful and a ton of fun at the same time.
I signed up for RMITV to gain practical experience and meet other people interested in media. Offbeat were one of the first shows I saw that were putting out crew calls, so I applied and was lucky enough to be given a place. At last weeks rehearsal, I was surprised to see how many people were apart of the crew who were studying outside the field of media, but were still spending their spare time helping out on set. Everyone I’ve worked with so far have been really lovely and enthusiastic.
Today I was working on the EVS. Initially, I was little intimidated by the controls. I’ve never worked with anything like it before, and the fact that I knew it was going live on air was a tad scary. It wasn’t too bad once I got the hang of it, however there were still a few problems.
For half the show, we were working without an autocue, which the host dealt with extremely well. Naturally, this meant there were a few changes to the script, one of which resulted in me accidentally playing the trailer for Batman vs Superman instead of Captain America: Civil War. Once I fixed my mistake, I was able to work through the rest of the show fairly smoothly.
I think I have a greater appreciation now for live-to-air productions than I did this morning.
