WK8 LECTORIAL: Narrative

‘everything is the story | the story is everything’

NARRATIVE: retelling of a sequence of events, they are logical and need causality.

CAUSALITY: logical progression of events (cause and effect)
character development:
– audiences must be presented with a series of situations with an opportunity for a character to respond.
– characters start as a blank canvas and form into a depth and complex personality
plot:
chronological series of events within a narrative
resolution:
natural result of the plot
– culmination of all preceding action

In the session, we paired up to map out the emotional highs and lows, with the presence of the main character/s. Bliss and I forget to actually ‘map’ it out using pen and paper – but here is a brief written map on The Lion King.

ACT ONE:
Introduction of Pride Rock, Mufasa and Simba, Mufasa’a death
Circle of Life: 10/10 the circle of life
Introduction: plateaus to stable line – intro of characters
Middle (climax 1): emotional experience of high emotions of lower felt emotion
ACT TWO:
Middle 2: Scar rules Pride Rock, Simba runs away (sad and happy)
Timon and Pumbaa: ‘Hakuna Matata’ steady field of emotion
ACT THREE
The Return of the King: anticipatory emotion
Simba’s Win: ends of emotional high of pride and happiness, back to the circle of life.

Having read this now, it makes no/very little sense. But we definitely thought we were pulling it off and we defs got caught up in the majestic and emotion-filled Disney classic that is The Lion King.

NON – NARRATIVE ?
– everything art form has the ability present a story, despite it not seeming so.

WE HAVE DECIDED NOT  TO DIE – David Askill
reasons why it may not be considered a narrative
– no logical sequence of events
– no true introduction of character and character development
– no traditional narrative beginning, middle and end
– no causality (cause and effect) between the three stories
– no plot
– nothing is explicitly stated in the film
– lack/no of conclusion, closure and explanation

reasons why it can be considered a narrative
– patterns of representation
– there is a presented journey between and within each character
– non-linear/ parallel storyline
– the title, gives causality to the film (choosing not to die)
– there was a presented climax in each segment of the film
– cyclical nature given to the three parts (birth, between and rebirth)

This was a freaky piece of audio and visual media. Chills were definitely felt across the room.
