– WEEK 6 READINGS –

Five kinds of mind: The few key words when we start working. This reading is quite useful as I think every person that goes into the work industry must understand.
Disciplines
Synthesizing
Creating capacities
Respect
Ethics
In general this reading is very relatable to myself, there are always a line and areas where I must understand in the future. Not just in terms of working, but in terms of creating and achieving a goal. These five principles is something I must always beware of. The reading uses a lot of facts and examples in supporting these five ideas. It also discusses topic like globalization, there are many readings out there about globalization, what makes this one particularly different is that it not only defines what it is, but also making it relevant to individuals.

– WEEK 5 READINGS –

Before reading this Chapter, the first thing that came into my mind about the title “Finding Time in a Digital Age” immediately reminds me of this book criticizing how much extra time we are actually investigating into technology. As we drawn into the digital age, we are creating a lot more extra work for ourselves. After reading this Chapter, it indeed open up a new perspective of how time were being utilize and wasted within the digital age. Not saying that we are wasting time, but that technology somehow helps us to gain more time. One of the examples that was talk about is how some app helps and reminds us of the events and things we need to do in a day, like a time action plan reminder. These technologies improve our time management but also allow us to be more proactive with time using. The alternative consumption of time is not just in the sense of more time, but more meaningful. As new technologies emerge with time, I wonder if we will be able to find a balance, or whether we will be relying on technology too much that we will never be able to notice.

– WEEK 4 READINGS –

The Craftman Mindset : The Passion Mindset

Both of these concepts have their own pros and cons, if I get to choose one, I would rather stay neutral, as I believe we shouldn’t be too subjective onto one idea. First of all, the craftman mindset focuses on what you can offer to the world, by clearing and clarifying the idea to yourself till it is understandable and work in your environment. While the passion mindset is what the world can offer you, by all means following a certain pattern. Some people might argue that craftman mindset is very like a “follow your dreams” while passion is more on following the world. Craftman mindset is sort of like a freelance situation in personal opinion. However I believe that I should be able to take a balance between both of these ideas in order to maintain a successful goal. We can’t always resist the reality, instead we must understand and pick certain areas to follow where public will also agree on.

– WEEK 3 READING –

This particular reading is not something that I will choose to read, however I enjoy the discussions on the limits of creative labour critique. The role of unpaid training and self- education, the unevenness of informal practices cronyism, word- of- mouth recruiting, lack of transparency- within formal media industries. This is significant as I am sure more students today experiences this, similarly to the idea of internships. The labour is quite important as it is the fundamental of everything, without it there will be no creative or social work force.

– WEEK 2 READINGS –

During my reading of A World of Differences, I do think this is not something I will normal come over. The structure of this reading is similar to a report, stating facts and statistics to identify the media industry. One thing I’ve learnt is the fact that the reading mentioned that system that China applies toward their media control. The fact that they minimize and control media flowing into China allows more opportunity for others to create and open up their new things locally. These are obstacles that China is facing due to regulations. With the growth of broadcasts and media markets, the excessive cultural influence can bring in big impacts to them.

– WEEK 1 READINGS –

Through this reading, I am especially interested in the way how identity are being affected overtime with technologies. Technology surly has the ability to empower oneself, however, I very agree that it also reduces one’s capability in the social world. Meanwhile technology and media also brings impact onto inequality and expand the gaps between middle class. As the reading suggested, the rise of inequality is more than an economic phenomenon of some concern which is a major challenge for society.

– PHOTOGRAPHY INSPIRATION –

FORMALISM

Formalism is not simply a style or a movement of photography. Formalism is an approach to analyzing the pictorial qualities of photographs. (T.Barrett 2005) Formalism ignores social context, historical context and the motivations of the photographer. (F. Ritchin, 1990)

The aim of a formal analysis then is “not to explore photographic content but to describe physical and formal attributes of a photographic print that form the tools a photographer uses to define and interpret that content.” (Stephen Shore
Phaidon, 2008) By understanding the theory behind formalism, it helps us understand how audience might interpret an image. I want to create a different perspective form for the audience to understand images differently; by in putting the idea of formalism into moving images, it will bring anticipation to the audience without exhausting them. This attempt is to energize the cityscape; the formal structures in formalism can bring different representations. I must however be aware with the unbalancing approach as it can create too much complexity for the audience to digest. The initial approach is to bring our world into the film but twisting it with unique cinematography as well as set designs. The cinematography will act, as a tension with static movements while set designs will be picking the best angles and locations to create this alienated dimension.

Formalism consist range of things, colors, view, symmetry, lines, shadows, lighting.

Formalism will quite important as it also help us with any lighting decisions. We will be more aware as formalism is largely concerned with the visual design of the image. Here are some interesting photographers that I come across that uses formalism as their base: Edward Weston, Lisette Model, Paul Strand, Alfred Stieglitz, Tina Modotti.

– STORY –

So it is almost Week 5 and we finally have our story finalised completely. One reason we have been delaying with this is because our story have constantly been too complex. One thing I learnt thorough this planning process is that simple is the key. When your story is clear and simple, you can slowly add things in to spike it up, however when it is overflow, it will be really difficult to take things out.
Summarising our story in a few dot points:
– girl exploring the hidden world
– utopia vs dystopia
– girl’s grandfather doesn’t belong to the higher society
– overpopulation
– brainwashed
