With over 450 million copies, Harry Potter is the best selling book series of all time. Many groups in society have challenged the beliefs and values Harry Potter expresses, mostly negative. However, this article in the Scientific American, opposes any negative debates. Bret Stetka (2014) Why Everyone Should Read Harry Potter, Scientific American. This article explores the reasons why reading, not only Harry Potter books, but any literary fiction, results in keener social perception and increased empathy. Literacy, has multiple sophisticated themes and characters, which enables readers to think about perspectives they might not consider in. What J. K. Rowling has created, is a whole world or complex themes and characters, that spread further than just the books themselves. This source was useful because I haven’t thought about Harry Potter as anything more than a fictional story. Additionally it was very easy to read, being an article, it was short and straight to the point. It definitely helped grow my understanding of how, not just Harry Potter, but any other literary fiction can have this kind of ramification.
