No zooms they tell us. They’re amateurish they tell us. I’ll tell you what’s not amateurish, using a zoom. Zooms can be used efficiently and have huge effects when done proper. And when done proper it takes skill, so I would argue that if a zoom is done correctly, it’s a sign of professionalism. Take Spielberg for example, the master of reaction shots. Now watch 2:01 – 2:04, or just the whole scene cause its amazing. That’s what I call a vertigo shot. Allegedly created by Alfred Hitchcock’s in his film Vertigo. This shot is a prime example of how well a zoom can be when used. I’ve also done a few zoom shots myself while working on projects and I think they look good, check the one below.
Another topic I would like to discuss in regards to zoom is the technique we got told today. Zoom in, then focus and zoom out to desired frame….. No. That is definitely not how it works. Every time you zoom a zoom lens, the focal length changes, which means the point of focus changes. So when you zoom in to obtain focus, you’ve focussed according to that focal length, when you zoom out, the object that was focussed using the previous focal length becomes out of focus. #justsayin
