WHAT?! We don’t have earlids? Well, obviously, but I’ve never really thought about it. This weeks lectorial, which happened last week, was constructed around sound. A memorable aspect of the class was the phrase, “there are no earlids”. I found it very interesting and thought provoking. Because, unlike our eyes, we can’t deliberately block out all sound, without an external device anyway. As a result, we are always interacting with sound. There is two ways we can interpret sound, listening, or hearing. Some people may argue that they are the same, however, this weeks class made me realise the difference. Hearing just happens, its sub conscience we are unable to completely block it out. Listening on the other ear (hear what I did there?), is intentional, we choose to tune into certain sounds, based on what sound is being made. Whether it is a conversation that sparks our interest, or a song we enjoy. Our brain decides to engage with that specific sound and we then listen rather than that sound being background noise that we hear.
