Final Scene 4 – BOY

My inspiration for my fourth and final scene came heavily from Su Freidrich’s Sink or Swim (1990). Freidrich’s film deals with story in unconventional methods using dialogue and written word to deliver poignant narrative and unbridled emotion.

I particularly enjoyed filming and editing together this piece because it allowed for much more creative license than the previous three. I had devised a script and used both recent footage and footage I had accumulated over the last 6 months in order to put together an arbitrary piece linked together by dialogue/written word.

My aim was to explore an alternative method in which dialogue/written word could be used in order to deliver information, and emotion to an audience. My previous three scenes had all used spoken word and, initially, I had wanted to create a piece with no dialogue and simply written word. Upon reflection, I thought the piece may have more effective grounding if I included spoken word over the top of the scene. Subsequently, I decided to create 2 versions; one with spoken and written word, and one with only spoken word.

Although I may have strayed from my original idea, I feel as though my interest in this exploration was a healthy aspect to pursue. Interestingly, I am left with a segmented exploration within the umbrella term ‘Dialogue’ – one that pursues the technicalities of filming dialogue; and one that explores the artistic effect that dialogue/written word can have within a scene.

Instead of focussing on what I perhaps do not like about the final product of this scene, I want to focus on the aspects that I do enjoy. I enjoyed working in all aspects of the production of the scene; from writing, to filming, to editing, and sound work. I also enjoyed taking the inspiration from Freidrich’s film and using the style to explore my own set of concepts and notions.
