For my research project, I have chosen to explore not only the use of dialogue within a scene, but also the different methods through which dialogue can be covered.
My reason for deciding on dialogue is because I am particularly fond of writing and the use of words – I believe that words are everlasting artifacts, perpetually existing through our continuous use of language.

My aim in my first exercise is to explore what makes dialogue so powerful within a scene. Is it the pacing? Is it the timbre of the actor/actress’ voice? Is it the tone of their voice? Does the background music contribute? How are the camera angles used to promote a certain mood within the dialogue? How is editing used? Are long takes used? Short takes? Is the director experimenting with different techniques? Are they using the same techniques repetitively?

I aim to do this by selecting or writing a short script – and filming/recording mine or someone’s voice and firstly experimenting with different ideas such as pacing, timbre and tone. I aim to have this completed by Wednesday next week. Secondly, I will attempt to film myself or a friend using different camera shots – I will aim to hopefully have this done by next weekend, if time permits it.

For this experiment, I do not want to sound and film to be synchronous. I want to have a little fun and see what sort of abstract work I can come up with and how it makes the audience feel. I feel as though my first experiment will end up being some sort of visual poetry with spoken word over the top. I intend to do more brainstorming over the weekend and come up with a more fluid idea and perhaps a plan of action for the following weeks.
