Here is my edited piece from class a couple of weeks ago. This prototype was my initial inspiration to pursue dialogue and the coverage of dialogue within a scene for my ongoing research task for this semester.
I had chosen a monologue called ‘Dance 10, Looks 3’ from a performance I had seen 2 years ago and decided to rethink the way it could be covered.
I had to take into account the fact that, originally, the scene was from a stage production. Additionally, the tone of the scene was originally upbeat and jubilant – my interpretation of the scene decided to take on a more sombre visage.
My interest in dialogue and the coverage of dialogue stems from my obsession with tension within a scene. I love the intensity of the spoken word and the lingering, chilling effects that it has on both the scene and the film from within the scene is plucked. Therefore, my intention for this exercise was to change the tone of the original monologue from something playful, to something a little more serious.
I intended to create something suspenseful by using quick cuts and close-ups of the characters – I also attempted to add tension by creating continuity flaws through my editing. Additionally, in order to create dramatic effect and exacerbate tension – I added asynchronous sounds of a ticking clock in the background.
I was actually quite pleased with how this scene came together, particularly when I filmed it all in about 5 minutes. I found the exercise a great starting point and has motivated me to find new ways of covering dialogue within a scene.
Earlier in the week, Robin sent me some clips to use as inspiration and I certainly was inspired by them. I find all of Robin’s input to be completely invaluable and everything always seems to relate to each other in a multi-faceted way.
