The Scene in Cinema Reflective Post Week 3 (1/3)

This week we dedicated time to planning out a scene, assigning technical/performance roles and then executing and editing the scene.

Firstly, I was taken aback at how many roles there are when creating a scene. I had never heard of a ‘Continuity Person’ before and was astounded at how pivotal they are in the endeavor of filming. I was excited to indulge in some camera work as I had spent the last lesson sitting in front of 4 cameras as my classmates could learn how to use the settings on the film cameras we have been using; I had no qualms with doing this, but I would have also liked to have practiced.

Filming was more difficult than I had expected. I am used to filming on a DSLR, and although I don’t use automatic functions, the Sony film camera (I’ve forgotten the model name) is a much more complex device and is much more nuanced and sensitive.

However, I was able to capture the shots necessary for our ‘Train’ scene with the help of my dynamic group. The most interesting part of filming was actually interacting with the people in the different roles and finally being able to differentiate between technical roles such as ‘Director’ and ‘Assistant Director’.

I enjoyed being the Director of Photography because I feel like that is the area I’m most interested in when it comes to behind the scenes work in film. However, I feel as though I need to practice with the settings of the camera properly in order to deliver the highest quality looking products.

I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise as it allowed me to become more familiar with not only the camera but also some of the skills and terms we had been taught the prior week. Although I thoroughly enjoy working with my classmates, I do hope we can do some independent projects soon.
