I found this brief particularly challenging, because I was extremely indecisive about a ‘theme’. I ended up focussing on the broken parts of the space where I live, it’s flaws and it’s quirks. I also decided to focus on the relationships that are formed within a broken place – harmony in chaos, if you will.
Thirdly, I decided to focus on the temporality and the transitivity of the space I live in. Not in a literal sense, of course, but rather a metaphoric sense as I see this space that I inhabit as a temporary space for me.
The flaws of the apartment are shown obviously through the photographs of the broken lights, clocks, ceiling and water heater. The broken fan in the bathroom is also shown through the video of the camera fogging up. The harmony in chaos is illustrated through the photos and recordings of my roommate and our friends that are constantly over. I showed the temporality of the space through the long exposure photographs – showing me, or a shadow of me, sitting in a chair.
Although I only see this space as a temporary space for me, a house rather than a home, I decided to include photographs and footage of things I will always bring with me – such as my crystals and books. I also captured footage of hobbies that I realised that I enjoyed doing in this space such as drawing, writing and reading.
The sound recordings capture the transitivity of the space as well. The whirring of the washing machine, the buzzing of the lights and the sound of the traffic outside are used as vehicles to portray the constant unease and discomfort of a temporary space.
I decided to use black and white effects in most my footage in order to banish any colour or warmth that may have been apparent. I wanted to show two sides to the space – it’s physical flaws and it’s sentimental redemption – and nothing more.
After completing this brief I have a greater understanding in regards to the importance of space and I am excited to explore more spaces and the memories and meanings attached.
