Adapting (In all senses of the word)

After reflecting on what an adaptation is in regards to a media text – it brought on some thoughts about the last degree I was undertaking. Adaptations or ‘adapting’ had a completely different meaning when I was studying Biology – it was all about a species ability to adapt to circumstances in order to survive.

Little did I know the this is essentially the same idea as we are confronting in Media, just a little different. Media textual adaptations is taking an original idea and adapting it to the social context of the time, adjusting the work to fit the views and values of society at the present time. This bears similarities to biology as we are adapting an idea so that it’s poignancy is reiterated in a contemporary social context – in finality, the idea is adapted so it can continue to deliver it’s message. It survives.

Perhaps this Fourth brief has taught me more than I originally thought it would – it has been a bit of a heinous process – I found it extremely restrictive which is an interesting contrast against the other work we’ve been doing during first semester. I would have liked to have created a short film for our final project. I guess the dry stuff is important, I’ve learnt a lot – not necessarily in the way I wanted to or the way I expected to learn. But I guess I’ll just have to adapt.
