This short video is a manifestation of the temporal essence of my identity. It is disjointed and fleeting, much like the impression that we as people leave on the world. I used many photos with light traces and long exposure to accentuate the idea that our identity is a shadow of the places we inhabit and the people we meet; the places we come and go from.
The videos I have used are all about being comfortable with my identity – one video is from a nightclub scene where nobody really cares about what you look like, what your sexuality is, how you choose to identify. Another fragment of video was filmed on a walk to the beach, I felt comfortable with who I was for the first time in as long as I can remember – the crashing of the waves and the fragrance of salty air was soothing and seductive. A third video is partly about me beginning to be comfortable in my own skin and partly about my identity as I transition into this stage of my life – becoming a blank canvas.
The audio files used were all created by me, I threw some sounds together in Logic Pro, it doesn’t sound particularly professional – but I’m not a professional, I’m learning and I think that’s really important for me to show. I layered my vocals and used an echo delay at some points to once again illustrate that our identity resonates within the places we have been. We are an echo in this world.
These pieces are mine and you should view them in their individual parts before you try to piece them together as a whole.
Ideally, if I were more adept at using editing software, I would have liked to have made some parts of the video a bit more ‘fluid’ so I could juxtapose the disjointed nature of some parts of the video against some of the more seamless transitions more prominently. Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to project my ideas more eloquently.
