Am I really a whole? Or am I simply fragments of myself?
Perhaps the best way to see something as a whole is to view it in it’s most intimate fragments. Look into the pieces I’ve produced and you will see yourself looking out – my identity is a reflection of the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met and the emotions I have felt. From the inconsistent focus of video which blurs the lines between you and I, the silhouette of a blank canvas, the sounds of me at both private and social times and images of the environment that I am engulfed by; look into me at my most raw and purified states.
Unable to use advanced technology, I used lighting and exposure to capture the essence of human identity in the volatile beauty of the world – we are living shadows of the the places we inhabit. I created ‘traces’ in my photos – they are traces of my physical actions, my emotions; they are traces of my ideas. These traces, alongside the images of light are used to accentuate the very essence of me being suspended in the suburban veins of the urban heart of my world, Melbourne. I was asked to reveal myself, to show who I was and what my identity is, and I became transparent – see through me, into my world; a reflection of myself.
