Approaching site – Testing Ground – Documentary Series
This project will allow students to engage directly with practitioners that work specifically with site in a number of disciplines such as architecture, design, art, sound, and performance.
Working in collaboration with the ‘Testing Ground’ organisation based in a central Melbourne, students, will be paired up (groups of three) with creative practitioners that have/are utilising the ‘Testing Ground’ site as the bases site-specific investigations.
Students will gather material and interview their allocated artist to create a 5-7min documentary that each will bring an insight into the multiple ways artists creatively work with site.
To begin
– Student groups and allocated artists.
– Initial research, meet and discuss artists practice.
– Create draft artist email for initial contact and potential interview time. Send to Robbie by Fri 21st August.
– Once approved send email to artist cc’ing robbie.rowlands@rmit.edu.au
Research
Utilizing your combined research draft a set of questions and consider the potential approach to interview/doco and site.

If you haven’t started a Lynda account, create one!
– Do a test run using video and sound equipment from tech building 9. (Photo evidence)
– Students each to research a written work that broadens their understanding of the concepts associated with the artists approach to site. (These need to be different for each person)
Submission – Due end of Week 7 – Fri 11 Sep – 4:30pm
– Upload mpeg4 to drive and blog – Remember to have backup copies of all material
– Submit proof of initial research and meeting notes/reflections.
– Submit an 800 word reflection that draws important insight from your experience with researching and documenting the artist and associated site/s. Also (crucial) include insight from readings from research with appropriate citing of references.
