Time to be a judgemental prick about other people’s work!
I’m just kidding…
On Wednesday 20th of April, we were forced (against our will) to show our finished interviews to the rest of the class. Overall, everyone’s was great! Some were phenomenal, others – while still good, could’ve been better. We were put into groups to assess one another’s work and give positive/negative criticism. Look below to see links to my group members interviews, as well as my feedback:
I really loved your interview! The acoustic guitar really worked well with the pacing of your interview. I also liked the shot where you panned from one photo to another. A very cool way of showing still images in a video, as opposed to just editing each individual photo within the actual video. The ending was also very well done, as the music came to an end and you also ended on your mum’s face. The only thing I noticed was the sound of a microphone rustling, which sort of took a bit out of the immersion value of that final shot. Other than that, fantastic job!
Loved the setting of your interview. Had a very ‘home’ feel to it, with the help of the kitchen, flowers and the dog resting on your mum’s lap. Fading from one shot of the interview to the next was also very smooth. However, I think it have been better if you used a different variety of shots for b-roll or overlay while your mum was talking. For example, she spoke about her kids, so maybe a few still images of the kids would of been interesting to see. But other than that – the shot was well lit and you had a nice depth of field as well, so well done!
Watt? Jokes aside, your interview was great! I liked the way a lot of your music was diegetic, not many other interviews had that implemented. It’s also great that your interview took place in two different areas – one in the office, and two in the hallway with all the framed pictures. Now to nitpick. The audio on your interviewee was a bit quiet. And some of the cuts in the audio were a bit noticeable (sometimes that is unavoidable though). But despite all that, I think you did a wonderful job! Keep it up!
You said your interview was bad, but I didn’t think so. You really did manage to convey his personality over through the interview. Having him singing to himself while running down the stairs, and also smiling while you pan away from him was a good way of showing what kind of person he is. Your opening shot was also nice, and I liked the way you used the empty space as a way of displaying your title. The audio for your interviewee could’ve been cleaner, as there was a bit of wind in the background. There was also a point in the interview where the audio for the interviewee sounded like it was echoing. I think it was when you cut to the shot of the library. One last thing – this could just be me though, but I think you could have framed your interviewee a bit better. With the wall directly on his left, having him centred sort of makes him looked ‘trapped’ within the frame. Despite all that, I think you did a good job! If you really think your interview was as bad as you said it was, use it as a learning experience, and use it to improve the media you make in the future!
