What is identity? (Project brief two)

Dog-person

If you haven’t recalled, project brief one gave us media students the task of collecting multiple ‘media artefacts’ that represented our identities in some way or form. Here’s a link to that project, if you haven’t already seen it. Why am I mentioning this project? Well, project brief two required us to – again, recreate our identity using media. Only this time, we had to edit all the media artefacts as one cohesive piece using Adobe Premiere Pro.

VIDEO

So with my piece, I tried to represent my identity using more obvious and direct techniques rather than through the use of abstract or poetic techniques. The main point of my video is to be funny – it’s meant to make the viewer laugh. The reason why I did this is to convey my sense of humour, and my love for all things hilarious. Calling the keyboard a guitar, accidentally dropping it, having a fireplace on the laptop, having subtitles pop-up during the argument and having my head on a toy baby in one of the stills were all designed to get a giggle or two out of the viewer. Whether or not I was actually successful in making the viewer laugh is hard to assess, because it all depends on each individual viewer. The second thing I tried to convey was my randomness. From obvious things such as having a digital fireplace which served no obvious purpose, to the more smaller details such as having my character change t-shirts every time the camera cut-away, were all implemented to show off my randomness. I also tried to convey my hot-headed nature. I tend to get quite passionate when I get into arguments, so what better way to show that off by having an argument over the script. One weird habit I have is that I sometimes talk to myself (don’t judge, it helps me think things through). The way I showed this trait off was by having the two characters in the skit being portrayed by me.

I feel like I could’ve improved a few things in this video. Firstly, the overall quality of the video was low. As a first time user of Premiere Pro, I couldn’t figure out why my 1080p footage wasn’t scaling with the frame in the editing panel. Secondly, the footage of the ‘cameraman’ was taken from my phone, while the footage of the narrator is from a DSLR. There is a clear distinction in the audio between the two cameras, and I feel like it takes the viewer out of the immersion of the video.

    • I’ve watched nigahiga since I was young, so I guess his work inspired me without my knowing of it. Thank you Camilla!
