Difficulties of the creative self-portrait

On Wednesday this week (02/03/2016 for those reading this at a later date), I had my first workshop for media one. As all first classes usually go, we were all introduced to one another and also engaged in activities that made us feel just that little bit more comfortable around each other. We were also tasked with an interesting; but spontaneous, mission – to capture a ‘Melbourne moment’ in 10 minutes. The first thought that ran through my head was,  “what the hell is a Melbourne moment?”. As everyone dashed for the elevator doors, I wondered whether on not I should capture the coffee culture that Melbourne is so famous for, or maybe its graffiti art that was scattered all around the town. I ended up capturing a photo of a construction site, based on the fact that Melbourne is a city that is forever expanding, which I believed to be a Melbourne moment in itself.

We were also given our first project to do over the week. The task was to create media components (text, images, video and audio) that reflected upon our own identities. At first glance, it seemed like a simple task, but upon working on the task, I was having a bit of trouble coming up with ideas. The main issue for me is figuring out how to communicate my identity through media components without editing it while also being poetic at the same time.

Coming up to present time (writing this post on 04/03/2016), I’ve made a little bit of progress. I’ve managed to plan out and source the materials needed for the images. My idea is to use several techniques such as; shadow manipulation, lighting and forced perception, in order to convey what I believe to be my sense of identity. I haven’t come across many difficulties in terms of the imagery so far. However, I’m having some trouble coming up with ideas of the video and audio aspects of the project. I believe this is what they call, “writer’s block”. I’ve managed to come with a single idea for both audio and video, but we are required to make THREE components for each medium, which is proving to be quite a challenge. I really hope I’m not the only one feeling this way…
