this week’s inspiration

for anyone who doesn’t know me, i’m a sucker for weddings. i love weddings. i will always cry when i’m at a wedding, see a wedding, hear a wedding… whatever. weddings. ily. ily weddings. ♥

in actual relation to integrated media though, i’ve come across this photography blog- Tea Lily Photography who does some absolutely amazing wedding photography. I took a special notice of the use of rule of thirds, framing and use of lighting in the photos. Even when in black and white, the photos are amazing.

Film-TV Question 3

Select from one of the readings from week 1 or 2 and briefly describe two points that you have taken from that reading. Points that excite you, something that was completely new to you.

Having only written one script (For a 2 minute short film in high school) in my life, I found the reading on Script Formatting and Layout to be the most interesting. A script is an easy way to lay out your story ideas on a (somewhat) visual timeline; it shows readers, producers, and distributors an idea of how your story will pan out- it also helps to see a script when considering worth and production costs; shitty script = no funding, sorry!

I didn’t realise there were so many specifics in scriptwriting; single spaced, a specific font and point, certain headings, writing in present tense… there’s a lot of detail that goes into a script; it seems to time-consuming!

This reading was not dry like a lot of the other’s I’ve read over the last year of the course- and I found it extremely helpful. As opposed to reading’s that generally talk about an idea or theory that is generally practiced in media, this reading was more of a scriptwriting guide. Definitely going to print this one and stick it on the wall for future reference!

Film-TV Question 2

Consider Jasmine’s lecture on Screenwriting and briefly describe one point that you have taken from it. A point that excites you, something that was completely new to you, perplexes you or even one you take issue with.

Jasmine made a good point about how in screenwriting, you are able to invent a world, its characters, the plot and the story in its own entirety. She also made a point (now obvious, in hindsight) that good stories are about extraordinary circumstances. It was always a habit of mine when writing, to base ideas or characters or situations on real things that have happened to me or around me, in my personal life. I have never been able to seek inspiration outside of my own world until being told what now seems like something so bleedingly obvious; I am essentially God. I can create whatever I want to create. If I want there to be a space-bear emerging from a flying saucer coming to Earth to time-travel and fix Stalin’s wrongs, so be it!

Another interesting point Jasmine made was the relationship of “cause and effect” with plot. In order to create audience engagement, there must be a chain of reactions that follow a conflict-causing problem which dramatically affect’s the protagonist- it must be problematic enough that it ruins their day or peace-of-mind; enough so that there can be a chain of events that follow to create a story.

Film-TV Question 1

In 200 words or less please outline your goals, desires – what you want to get out of this semester. You will review this later in the course. Many will rethink this dramatically – this is a good thing.

In this semester I hope to really develop my production techniques; having realised I am a lot less experienced than many other in my course, there is a lot I can learn in all areas of film & TV- camera composition, sound, lighting, story-writing, editing, the works! Having never used Adobe Premier before, I am interested to see how it compares to Final Cut, and I hope by the end of the semester I will be more confident using Premier than I am with Final Cut.

If I can come out of this semester saying I know twice what I knew coming into the subject, I will be content with my learning experience. While I have no idea where I’d like this course to take me career wise, I hope that by the end of the year, if not the semester, I will have a bit more direction. This semester I also aim to begin my work attachments or find an internship in order to boost my learning and get some outside skill which will also contribute to my degree. I hope to be more invested in the course this year than I was during first year.
