How does this documentary alter your understanding of the way you use social media?
Although I found this documentary really interesting to watch, I don’t think that it has altered the way in which I use social media. Everything that was spoken about through the documentary wasn’t really a surprise. We are living in a world now where facts and statistics such as these are the norm – I think that people who don’t realise this is what’s happening are left behind in the world. Anything that was stated through the documentary wasn’t new to me. Even the kid skater – I’ve learnt to not be surprised by anything that the internet produces. This is where the business is, so why wouldn’t the big businesses be there?
What connections can you make with the role of a Social Media Producer?
A description for a job for a SMP:
The position of Social Media Producer is to write and manage editorial content for an upcoming reality TV show across its website and all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
As the documentary points out, we are ALL SMP’s. Why? We like to talk about the things we like. We want to talk to other people who like the same things we do.. We don’t do it for any other reason than that. This doco made it seem like a bad thing – like we were being manipulated into doing everything we do. But guess what? We do what we do because we want to. For example, I run a Tumblr blog, which features over 60,000 posts. Some my own work, and others reflagged from other blogs. I talk about shows, music and films on this site, as well as twitter and Facebook. BECAUSE I WANT TO!
What ideas does this documentary raise in regards to the event your group is planning and the task of achieving participatory engagement?
The main idea I grasped from this doco was the idea of networking, specifically in regards to the internet. For our event, we need to network – get the idea out there for everyone to see and pass onto each other!
