Film/TV2 – A&R One – Question Three

In this week’s lecture, scenes from Scott Ruo’s ‘Four Images’, Brian Hill’s ‘Drinking for England’ and Chantal Akerman’s ‘D’Est’ were screened.  Choose one of these, and consider, in a single paragraph, what might have intrigued, interested, displeased or repelled you.

“Drinking For England” – Brian Hill

This week, a clip from Brian Hill’s “Drinking For England” was shown in our lecture. Like being shown any scene without the context before or after it, it’s always a little difficult to situate yourself within the cinematic universe.
To be honest, I found this documentary unsettling. From the voice over and interviews, to the singing, head bobbing and consumption of nicotine and alcohol. The way in which the scene manoeuvred (suprising the audience) from interview to performance.
As I said, I am not sure whether it was because I was unable to situate myself within the film (having not seen prior scenes), but for me, the clip was uncomfortable.
