good lord, today’s unlecture thing really was boring. i mean, it was necessary and i did learn a lot from it but i feel that my entire soul was sucked out sitting on those hard, worn and torn chairs.
i genuinely believe that what we covered in that hour could have been cut down to like 15 minutes, 25 mins tops. i like to believe that we all know that you can’t just steal people’s shit without giving credit / asking permission and that if someone messages you being like “hey man, that’s actually mine can you get rid of it” you do.
it’s literally what our parents have taught us since we could walk and act for ourselves – don’t steal!!!! and i really think while it had its fascinating points we needed a whole hour lecture on that. it really seems that rmit has cracked down on their copyright infringement policy as well, and not only that but the whole defamation problem as well. i didn’t particularly enjoy being told that unless we’re some expert on the matter, any negative opinions should be avoided as someone’s gonna sue my ass for defamation. i personally thought the main idea of these blogs – and a blog in general – was for creative liberty and this, i guess, ‘passive stifling’ of our freedom of speech (which apparently can’t hold up in the court of law anywhere but in north america) is super bumming me out. like, it was almost to the point of don’t write a restaurant review because you could be sued.
i definitely understand the warning we’ve received from them, though, and this strong enforcement of the consequences of copyright infringement, especially if we want to work in such an industry where all forms of media are so tightly intertwined and the use of other’s content is common, but i like to believe that we’re all smart enough to know right from wrong
i am at least, but whatever. i guess my business is the only one who matters to me (less competition, right? 🙂 )
