Hedgehog Love: Production Day #1

It was really good to meet the actors for our production and be able to start working with different people. I thought that our group worked very well together as well and we all contributed our ideas and communicated how our role was going and if there were any problems to do with either camera, lighting or sound. As the cinematographer I worked closely will most roles on set. I communicated with lighting so that the actors and background were properly lit, the camera would also appear dull down once you press record so I needed to keep this in mind when seeing if we could adjust in some ways. Our audio wasn’t connected to the camera, which will be very important when editing, so my main concern as we were using a boom microphone was ensuring that the microphone and any shadows were not a part of the shot, our staging was set up nicely so this didn’t become much of a problem.

However, I felt like we could have been more prepared for the filming schedule. There was a little too much of waiting around and the way we filmed wasn’t ideal. We kept swapping between the actors which meant that we had to keep resetting and adjusting the lighting and setting so it looked exactly the same as the previous shots. This really dug into our time and could possibly have affected how the shots turned out. One positive from that I guess was that we were able to practise and know what our set up will be for next time, and when we have our next production shoot we will ensure we get all of the scenes in that shot that needs to be done and then move on. It would be very useful to plan a strict production schedule that is followed so we don’t waste any time or go over by re-doing shots.
