Another short film that I am reviewing is Disney Pixar’s Piper made in 2016 directed by Alan Barillaro – which was first distributed alongside the feature film Finding Dory (2016) in cinemas. The film tells the story of a hungry young sandpiper bird who must overcome its fear of water. This 6-minute short film is able to capture the important and inspiring message of the film of overcoming one’s fears, it was also successful as it won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Again, this short film uses no dialogue which I think is what makes it so effective. The audience needs to really pay attention and you end up noticing a lot more in terms of the slightest facial expression or movement and the sound effects or music. The music in this short film really reflects the emotions and feelings of the baby sandpiper. The score is very bright and uplifting to portray the innocence of the baby sandpiper, when the first wave hits it the score stops to demonstrate its shock, when the baby sandpiper is no longer afraid of the water and becomes skilled in finding food for the group the music picks up again to reflect its glee and happiness again. The music and score are very important in providing character insight and highlighting important moments in the story for the audience. Even when the music stops the sound effects are always rich and create a realistic sense of space and setting for the viewer. The use of simple and clear imagery in the short film is also very effective in providing an uplifting, and at times suspenseful, story. These are some of the key points that I will try to experiment with in future works as the score and music can sometimes be forgotten.
