Week 8: Lectorial- Fans

In today’s lectorial we focused on attention.

The first part of the lecture discussed fans. I realised that the idea of what an audience is has changed over time. There is not just one identifiable audience anymore. Audiences are becoming more active which leads to many reception theories, compared to the previous effects theories where audiences were only passive and could become brainwashed by the media. A possible reason for this change in what an audience is could be the rise in new technologies, people have access from numerous amounts of sources to get their information. This also links to fans as they are becoming more active.  Fans now can create content online that relates to the content and can then become themselves producers as well as consumers- blurring the boundaries. This helped my understanding of attention and how it can change overtime as it is evident that more and more audiences can and are becoming more involved.

I think an important part of the lecture which I liked was about the editing. It really helped to make sure to have an assembly, a rough cut and a fine cut so that. I have already been following this, loosely though. As I always lay out my footage in order first before adding or editing anything else- especially colour correcting or editing such as special effects as it would be a waste of time. It helped to remind me to always properly organise my footage before beginning to edit. This is all very valuable and will help as I continue to do more work later on.
