W2 “symposium” reflection ~~

Although I’m not sure yet how important it was to spend our whole one ‘un-lecture’ hour on this specific idea, I’m sure it’s significance will become clearer as the course moves on and it certainly was pretty interesting once i understood the gist of it.

Essentially, Adrian attempted to open our minds so that we understand that there is a stranger understanding to all things that we do not view as strange. This concept i have come across a lot throughout this communications degree where we often delve into the complexities and fundamentals of things we take for granted such as language which absolutely boggles my mind. I am however beginning to get used to it and what Adrian said to us made full sense to me.

The example he used more specifically was in this idea of a ‘story’ that we hold. A story for us must always possess a beginning, middle and end. But why? I know i was brought up with the idea ingrained in my mind that this is so because its just the natural way of things but it isn’t. Our methods of narrating have evolved as a consequence of material media. When the book was created, it had the limitations of a first page and a last page and from here on in this has shaped our idea of a narration.

Where this applies to us as Networked Media students is the introduction of computers and what this means for the ‘story.’ On a  computer, there is no first of last page. No limitations, just a large space for expression. We are not mentally equipped to use this space in any way other than what we already know with our previous technologies, so how can we learn to be native in the internet space?

This question i find super intriguing and can’t wait to find out as this course progresses!

mind = blown

mind = blown
