M5 PROJECT 2 – DEVELOPMENT – CREATING A DREAMSCAPE IN A ZINE

“between reality and dream, the object and the subjective, the unconscious and conscious mind.” (Sharot 2015, p. 70)

The quote above is from my preliminary research “Dreams In Films And Films As Dreams Surrealism And Popular American Cinema” I was very excited to explore how I could waver between dream, time, memory, reality and imagination within my Zine. I took a very visual approach within the beginning stages but also knew I wanted to create poetry for it as well. Originally I was going to create a poem for each visual piece but I decided to treat poems individually to capture a mood and flow between pieces instead. With my writing I have captured a dream like sense through floating between different places, emotions and tenses. I’ve used various stances of first, second and third person within my pieces as well to place the reader in different perspectives.

Music was also something I wanted to use throughout my Zine but originally I was going to have a single playlist at the start of my Zine and each song would be an optional listening exercise for each piece. This developed into playlists throughout the Zine however that captured their own experience and was an invitation for the reader to fall into a day dream for thirty minutes or so. The inclusion of music was not just to create a piece that was more immersive but also a personal exploration into how I use music as a coping mechanism, which I feel is something that most people do, so I wanted to have something that could be relatable or healing for my reader.

I started and ended my Zine with open letters, I’m contemplating trying to loop the beginning and ending lines but that is to be decided.
