M5 PROJECT 2 – REFERENCE AND REVIEW – INSPIRATION

Film inspirations for my microfilms and zine (not from Tiktok).

• Paprika (2006) Directed by Satoshi Kon.
• Wes Anderson

From Alice in Wonderland and Paprika I really borrowed the style of fluidly between day dreams and the waking world. This translates strongly within my Microfilm “The Wandering Mind” and throughout my pages within my zine wavering between images, poetry and playlists. At first I wasn’t planning to dive into the ideas of the nightmare, doppelganger or the uncanny but it really came through in my microfilm (Through The Frame). I really borrowed from Mother!’s emotional response from being trapped in a nightmare like space and Meshes of the Afternoon with the idea of the multiple self  which also bleeds into my interest in Surrealism. Within my zine I have tried to keep it light and happier so I have tried to distance and soften the more nightmarish, doppelganger and uncanny elements. Because of iso I have had to be my own model and actor so due to my personal manic pixie dream girl style/vibe/personality combined with my whimsical/quirky creative style I think there’s definitely glimpses of Wes Anderson within my work (although indirectly). I do like that through my work however I’m taking back the “manic pixie dream girl” term and redefining it as 3 dimensional and independent from the male gaze.
