Colour In “Strawberry Jam”

The only concept that didn’t really change or develop too much in “Strawberry Jam” was the idea of two moods conveyed very strongly through colour. I used video from my trip to Asia in February 2020 in which I visited Japan, Vietnam and Singapore. For mood 1 I was really in love with the fogginess of Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, the skies where a really oppressive grey and you felt easily dazed in the fog. I used this grey and emptiness to represent my loneliness during the last year of my relationship with overlays of photos of the clock in my Grannies palliative care room (she’s okay now). I wanted to keep colour very minimal keeping to greys, whites and blacks. While mood 2  was very much filled with pinks, blues and soft purples through videos at Singapore’s Gardens By The Bay as well as photos taken in Melbourne and in my Grannies garden. This is representation of the self love, confidence and happiness I’ve found since after the breakup. This colour pre-planning were easily captured in my mood boards in my earlier presentation. One decision that did change a little was the addition of the footage on a train I took in Japan from Kyoto to Otsu, there’s still confinement in the image but also a lot of colour which I love as a nice transition between the moods.

I haven’t seen a lot of experimental films which have influenced my choices in colour, I’ve always been very particular about colour and while I wasn’t trying to be influenced I do think Sophia Coppola’s “Lost In Translation” really covers the vibe I was trying to capture through colour.
