EDITING CONSIDERATIONS

  • Look for moments that effect you either intellectually or emotionally.
  • Emotion/tension/opposition.
  • Look for links and transitions.
  • Be aware of the energy levels of the interview subject.
  • Be a viewer as well as a storyteller.
  • Look for meaning and emphasis.
  • You have to be aware of the energy levels during the shoot and also during the editing process.

COMMON PROBLEMS

  • There’s no story. Some people start one story and often end another. There are too many beginnings and endings.
  • Too many characters or story threads.
  • Other interviews are there to add more representational examples, not to detract from the main contention.
  • Not enough breathing room, to packed.

KEY QUESTIONS

  • In what order should you show cause and effect?
  • How does this film imply someone or something has grown or changed?
  • Does the story show that someone has learned something has happened?
  • Start planning with a preliminary dialogue cut? Start with an interview that you’ve got then edit the key parts together? You decide how to start the process.
